In athletics, in this case football, sometimes things happened that are hard to explain. Friday night was a perfect example of that as the Lions went to Northeastern, only to have the hungry Bobcats pulled of a stunning upset, 23-16.
Red Lion coach Jesse Shay summed it up best.
“They were just hungrier than we were.”
A three-and-out for Red Lion on the opening series set the tone and Northeastern rode the wave of confidence from there.
The Lions uncharacteristically did not get a first down in their first three series and were on their heels after an early touchdown and safety got the Bobcats going.
“They did nice things, but we just didn’t show up,” said Red Lion coach Jesse Shay. “We couldn’t get going. Those three-and-outs most certainly gave them confidence. Especially for a team that has given up points.”
With things going their way on one side of the ball, the Bobcats were also able to move the ball on offense.
“That was the worst game we have played,” said Shay.
Shay wasn’t sure if this week’s expected Division I showdown with unbeaten York High distracted his players, he refused to take away from Northeastern, saying: “They just beat us.”
