Lions get first win of season

Red Lion had its share of misfortune during Friday's home opener against South Western.

There was a muffed punt, an interception and a pair of pass interference calls that went against the Lions.

Yet, Red Lion found a way against the Mustangs.

The Lions took advantage of a South Western mistake - and did the little things when needed and went on to a 43-21 victory.

One play after Jeffrey Nyamekye's touchdown put Red Lion ahead 14-6, Red Lion sophomore caught a Mustang from behind, saving a touchdown and the Lions responded with a goal-line stand.

Red Lion kicker Garrett Coppersmith saved a South Western touchdown on the second-half kickoff by slowing the returner down and the Mustangs would not score on the drive.

'Those are the ones that win games," said Shay. "Both those kids are sophomores. For sophomores to make those plays and contribute that is awesome for this team and speaks highly of the future of this football team."

South Western cut the Lions lead to 20-14 when Red Lion botched the kickoff return.

However, quarterback Randy Fizer faked out everyone, acting he was going to run, before hitting a steaking Nyamekye for a 99-yard touchdown.

"Fizer's play was athlete being an athlete," said Shay. "He's a kid that not only has confidence in is abilities but what makes that work is his teammates. I thought the offense as a unit, top to bottom, played well."
