It didn’t take Lions coach Jesse Shay many words to sum up what he liked most about his team’s win at New Oxford.
Balance.
The Lions had another dominating first half against the Colonials, running 56 plays while only allowed 30 yards.
“Offensively for (quarterback Zach) Menzer to have three touchdown passes and the balance rushing the ball, I thought we had very nice offensive game,” Shay said.
“Our defense played exceptionally well. When you run more plays than the other team gains yards, good things are going to happen.”
While the rivalry contest at Dallastown looms in two weeks, Shay is not concerned with his team looking past this Friday’s opponent, Spring Grove, in the final home game of the regular season.
The coaches can just remind the team what happened at Northeastern, when the Bobcats surprised the Lions, the week prior to the York High showdown.
“We keep harping on what happened week five. It’s really that simple. If you look ahead, bad things happen and we know that first-hand,” said Shay. “I don’t think we are going to have a problem getting them to to concentrate on the Rockets.”
One thing Shay is most proud of is how his team is rallying around the other sports teams at Red Lion, particularly the boys and girls soccer team, each of which won their Division I regular season titles.
“As a football team we were over for both (division) clinching wins. We want our kids to be Red Lion proud, not just in football, and not just athletics.”
